Exhibit: East Hampton’s Summer Colony: 1880-1940
Filled with fascinating artifacts,  East Hampton’s Summer Colony: 1880-1940East Hampton’s Summer Colony: 1880-1940 is an exhibition that brings to life the story of the discovery of Long Island’s East End as a healthful and untouched seaside resort.

By horse-drawn stage, smoking train or rutted road, East Hampton was the destination for the socially prominent, the wealthy merchant class and the artistically savvy.

Using historic clothing, rare photographs, period sporting equipment, bicycles, postcards, and other ephemera, this kaleidoscopic display will transport the visitor to a nostalgic time of summers past.

Little Known Facts - from the Town Crier
From the archives of Hugh King, East Hampton\'s Town Crier.

A First Lady from East Hampton

Since this is a presidential election year, we thought it à propos to mention a First Lady who hailed from East Hampton.

Julia Gardiner became the first First Lady from East Hampton when she married the widowed John Tyler in 1844.

Julia, who was born on Gardiner’s Island, was considered one of the great belles of the day, receiving no less than five proposals of marriage while visiting Washington, D.C. in the early 1840’s. After her marriage to John Tyler she reigned as the consummate Washington Hostess for only eight months and then returned with her husband to their plantation in Virginia.

She visited East Hampton when she was 61 years old.
